Return of the Musical Nerds

Nerds & Music

by Rasmus Rasmussen on April 1, 2011

About a year ago, I went to W00tstock 2.0, a gathering of geek royalty hosted by Wil Wheaton, Adam Savage and comedy duo Paul & Storm. I interviewed Paul & Storm back then, and in the time that has passed W00tstock has traveled across the North American continent with a host of supernerds performing in the show. Recently, Paul and Storm returned to Seattle to put on a smaller version of their show, this time under the headline “Nerds & Music”. They asked if I would like to come document the show once again, and to be honest I was thrilled to do so.

Nerds & Music in Seattle took place at The Triple Door. If you haven’t been there, you should go. To perform with them, Paul and Storm had re-recruited drummer Jason Finn (who usually keeps the beat in Presidents of the United States of America), and the two opening acts were Mike Phirman (of Hard ‘n’ Phirm) and Hank Green (one half of the vlogbrothers). If you’re into nerdy comedy on the interwebz, those names should already be familiar to you. If they aren’t, follow the links and check them out.

These are all examples of artists who have found their own niche and groove. They’re doing their own thing, their own way and have different, yet complimentary styles and talents. When it all comes together, magic happens. That’s why the w00tstock events were so amazing, and the slightly scaled down version has the same feel. Personally, I think a lot more artists – whether comedians, musicians or other performers – could benefit from banding together like this.

Below is a slideshow of some of the photos I took, presented in chronological order. Beneath that are 2 videos from the event, first a clip of Hank Green and Storm in the green room – riffing off each other and talking about a getting pooped on in a dream. Finally, a clip of Paul & Storm performing “I Will Sing a Lullabye” at the show.
